ITAP: WATER FOR ALL IN BURUNDI

The Seclusion Cloister Sisters Community in Rweza,  Burundi, has done its best to find out funds and materials in order to modernize the obsolete and damaged cloister plumbing system, which couldn’t anymore supply clean water.

Furthermore, the sisters aim is to build a new small aqueduct for needy people living in the cloisters’ surroundings.

ITAP has decided to contribute to the realization of this project and has supplied the materials for the plant building. Products have come to destinations and works have become with big enthusiasm and great hope.

A little big help according to the 6th point of the UN GLOBAL GOALS.

The 6th UN goal for a sustainable development is to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”.

2,6 BILLIONS: people who have had access to better drinking water resources.

663 MILLIONS: people who don’t have access to drinking water.

DRINKING WATER POLLUTED by excrements: water rescource for 18,0 milliards people worldwide.

Acces to better water

FROM 76 THROUGH 91%: worldwide population that have had acces to better water rescources from 2015 till today.

40%: worlwide population with lack of water.

ACCESS TO SANITATION AND HYGIENE: 2,4 billions people don’t have access to WC or outhouse.

RIVERS AND SEAS: host 80% of the wastewater of human production without any depuration system.

1000 CHILDREN PER DAY: die because of diarrhoeic illnesses bound to water and hygiene.

6 clean water THE GLOBAL GOALS

GOALS:

6.1   By 2030, achieve universal and equitable access to safe and affordable drinking water for all.

6.2   By 2030, achieve access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for all and end open defecation, paying special attention to the needs of women and girls and those in vulnerable situations.

6.3  By 2030, improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, halving the proportion of untreated wastewater and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally.

6.4  By 2030, substantially increase water-use efficiency across all sectors and ensure sustainable withdrawals and supply of freshwater to address water scarcity and substantially reduce the number of people suffering from water scarcity.

6.5    By 2030, implement integrated water resources management at all levels, including through transboundary cooperation as appropriate.

6.6   By 2020, protect and restore water-related ecosystems, including mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, aquifers and lakes.

6.a  By 2030, expand international cooperation and capacity-building support to developing countries in water- and sanitation-related activities and programmes, including water harvesting, desalination, water efficiency, wastewater treatment, recycling and reuse technologies.

6.b   Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management.
